Chapter 24

Mal

Whether Tweed returned as promised, I couldn’t tell when I decided it must be morning. The reprieve of pain is well and truly over, as I force my feet from beneath the sheets. They drop heavily onto the carpet, sending so much force through my legs, I thought my knees might shatter. I cry out, the sound echoing around the bedchamber. I have no doubts, had I remained in bed and given into the crippling need of my bladder, Tweed would have cleaned the sheets and said nothing of it.

“Over my dead body,” I grumble. I’m poisoned, not an invalid. The Mighty Malice won’t be going out in a patch of piss. Forcing myself upright, I half-hold the bed and hobble to the ottoman before needing a breather. Giving myself a pep-talk, mostly consisting of cursing and a fair amount of self-hatred, I scrape one foot in front of the other, blindly aiming for the bathroom. My fingers grace the high-back armchair, causing me to flinch. I’m sure it was further over but what do I know?

Somehow, guided by a sense of direction I didn’t know I had, I make it to the door. Cool tile welcomes my toes, and from there I rush to stumble to the toilet. Oh, the humble throne of smooth porcelain. I’ve never felt such ecstasy as I relieve myself, my moans similar to those I made last night. And that’s before I work my way into the shower and figure out how to turn it on by touch alone.

Scalding heat pours down on my head, heating the aches and pains within my limbs. Once more, I let my imagination take hold, pretending I can feel the thickness of poison washing away, pooling at my feet, and disappearing down the drain. It’s brief, but still welcome as I convince myself I’m back to full health. I’m like a walking placebo.

No sooner have I fiddled around to turn off the faucet, do I hear a commotion beyond the closed door. Muffled, angered shouts. The storming of heavy feet. No, not feet–hooves. Reaching out, trying to locate a towel, my fingers brush something soft. I clamp down, dragging it into the cubicle to dry myself.

“Hey! Do you mind?!” a familiar voice hisses in a harsh whisper. The type which would have far too many teeth. I stall, mid-flossing between my ass cheeks and, pluck the softness out.

“Chesh?” Lifting the heavy weight, I feel around for her tummy as a set of tiny claws leap onto my arm. Scampering upwards, something nestles behind my ear, and I gasp. “Stan!” My hand opens on instinct, dropping Chesh in a heap on the floor. She floats back up, reclining across my shoulders.

“We don’t have much time to get you out of here. You must do exactly as I say.”

“Out of the bathroom? I don’t like to brag, but I think I’m a fucking master at this being blind stuff. Got in here just fine.” Feeling around the shower cubicle, I forget about the half-step and crash onto the floor.
